The present name 'Bangalore' is derived from 'Bendakalooru'
or the tower of boiled beans. It is situated at an altitude of 3000ft above
sea level and is the fifth largest city and administrative capital in India.
It enjoys a mild and healthy climate and is termed as the 'Garden City' with
beautiful parks and wide avenues.

Places of Interest
The Bull Temple - Constructed in the 16th century. It has been named after the
grey granite sacred bull Nandi, carved out of a single granite block.
Vidhan Soudha - It is a four storied building. It houses the state legislative
assembly and part of secretariat. The main feature of this building is its
architectural style-a combination of traditional and modern styles. The
building is illuminated on Sunday evenings.
Lalbagh - A botanical garden spread over 240 acres. It was called Lalbagh
because the garden had a profusion of red roses. It also has a greenhouse with
a collection of unusual flora.
Cubbon Park - Is a 3000 acre park laid in 1864.
Gavipuram Cave Temple - Devoted to Lord Shiva. Speciality is that on a
particular day in the month of January, a ray of sunlight penetrates and
strikes the 'linga' in the sanctorum.
The Planetarium - Is located on Sankey Road and presents shows.
Government Museum and Venkatappa Art Gallery - Displays a collection of
archaeological artifacts. The art gallery has a collection of works of the
noted artist from the court of Mysore - R. Venkatappa.
Nandi Hills - 38 miles by road or rail. The highest point on the hills is
4,850 ft. above sea level.
